Bahia Concepcion
Playa Santispac
On April 26 we leave Bahia San Sebastian towards Bahia Concepcion, located approximately 25 NM to the North. Bahia Concepcion is an immense bay almost 20 NM long which is home to several dozen beaches, each as beautiful as the next. Here again, the color of the water is sublime. We decide to anchor at Playa Santispac, located to the north of the bay.
Playa Santispac is a huge white sand beach, lined with cabins serving as shelter for local families coming to spend the day at the sea. A restaurant there serves excellent tacos, ceviches and shrimp for a reasonable price.
The main road runs along the beach and provides easy access to Mulege in around twenty minutes. We met Marcelo, a local ranchero who offered to take us to Mulege for the day to visit and stock up. It was finally his father Abraham who would show us around the city the next day.
Isla Requeson
On April 29 we go to Isla Requeson, about 8 NM south of Playa Santispac. The configuration of the island is particular, at low tide a strip of sand joins the mainland thus forming an immense swimming pool. The place is very busy with motorized campers.
Playa Santa Barbara
On April 30 we head back towards Playa Santa Barbara where we anchor for a few hours to go to the beach and do snorkeling. The wreck of a small sailboat is located in the middle of the bay and is home to many fish.
Playa El Coyote
We arrive at Playa El Coyote late in the afternoon and anchor near the beach. We get off the dinghy to go to the restaurant which unfortunately turns out to be closed. We walk around the hill that separates Playa El Coyote from Playa El Burro. Aracely’s restaurant is an excellent choice, the fish and shrimp ceviches are delicious. We return to the boat for the night, the next day we decide to anchor at Playa El Burro.
Playa El Burro
On May 1st we anchored at Playa El burro. We return to the beach to try the Nomadico restaurant which is also an excellent choice. We end the day with an excursion into the mountain behind the beach, the ascent is quite hazardous, there is not really a path through the immense rocks but the view from the summit is magnificent. Back at the boat, we contact Marcelo to see if he can take us to Mulege the next day for a city tour with the children.
Mulege
On May 2, as agreed, Marcelo is waiting for us on the beach at 9:00 a.m. We go to the Museo Excarcel. It is the first prison built in Baja California at the beginning of 1900, converted into a museum in 1975.
The next visit will be the Mission, a perfectly preserved church once built by the Jesuits, located on a hill on the edge of the town. Next to the Mission, a viewpoint allows you to observe the Rio and its strip of intense green vegetation which contrasts with the desert setting.
Back at the boat early in the afternoon, we leave Bahia Concepcion towards Punta Chivato.
